Sean Murphy Traded to Atlanta Braves

Catcher Joins NL East Contenders

Murphy to Bring Defensive Prowess to Atlanta

In a blockbuster trade, the Atlanta Braves have acquired catcher Sean Murphy from the Oakland Athletics. Murphy, 28, is a two-time Gold Glove winner and is considered one of the best defensive catchers in baseball. He has a career .992 fielding percentage and has thrown out 40% of attempted base stealers.

Offensively, Murphy is a solid hitter, with a career .231 batting average, .329 on-base percentage, and .453 slugging percentage. He hit 18 home runs and drove in 66 runs in 2022.

The Braves are expected to use Murphy as their starting catcher, replacing Travis d'Arnaud. d'Arnaud was a solid hitter for Atlanta, but he is not as good a defender as Murphy. The Braves are hoping that Murphy's defensive prowess will help them improve their pitching staff and compete for a World Series title.
